Dark skin and dense hair are underrecognized barriers to venipuncture. This article reviews clinical evidence on vein visualization devices in darker-skinned populations, examines the limitations of traditional devices, and introduces next-generation vein finders optimized for melanin absorption and hair interference.

A research team in Indonesia developed Melanveer, a low-cost near-infrared vein finder using CLAHE image enhancement. Tested on 20 patients across a full range of skin tones, it achieved 94% vein detection accuracy, demonstrating that effective dark-skin vein visualization does not require expensive equipment.
